Premium domains are particular domains, identified by the Registry (or sometimes by the Registrar) which, due to their characteristics (understood as: presence of particular keywords or brands in the name, brevity or ease of memorization) are subject to particular commercial conditions.

Premium domains are a feature of gTLDs and newTLDs: in principle, premium domains usually do not exist for ccTLDs.

There are at least three different commercial policies for Premium domains:

  • Premium rate only for the first registration, while subsequent renewals and transfers will be carried out at the standard rate
(This category also includes "premium Aftermarket" domains, i.e. "normal" domains already registered in the past, and which are then put back on sale by the owner Registrant via specialized platforms)
  • Premium rate both for registration and for any subsequent renewal or transfer
  • Premium rate for the first registration, variable rate for each subsequent renewal or transfer

The registration of a Premium domain may also be subject to other constraints, such as:

  • obligation to maintain the domain with the same Registrar for a certain minimum number of years (or to proceed with an early renewal for a certain number of years)
  • transfer-out fee (i.e., the transfer to another Registrar is subject to payment to the losing Registrar of a certain fee, usually varying from 1 to 10 years of maintenance/renewal)

The list of the most prestigious Premium domains is usually drawn up by the respective Registry, which sometimes also takes care of drawing up the relevant technical management regulations.

In principle, they are Premium domains:

  • those consisting of geographical names (cities, regions, states...)
  • those consisting of particular keywords
  • particularly short ones (all 1, 2, 3 and sometimes 4 letter domains are to be considered Premium)

Premium domain fees can be slightly higher than those of standard domains, but can also reach significantly higher prices (in the order of thousands of dollars in annual maintenance fees).
